Juanita H. Baker married the love of her life, John Haywood Baker, Jr., in 1959, and took great pride in her role as a wife and mother. She attributed her success to a strong spiritual upbringing that led to her unwavering faith in God and the church.
Juanita was a career State of North Carolina employee and served in many capacities until her retirement in 2005. She served as Superintendent of the N. C. Correctional Institution for Women, Personnel Director for the Department of Correction, and Special Assistant to the Secretary of the Department of Correction. She also served as a member of the N. C. Parole Commission, and was Chairwoman of the N. C. Parole Commission when she retired.
Juanita received many awards and honors including being featured in Ebony Magazine. She was recognized by the Women's Forum of North Carolina, a two-time recipient of the Order of the Long Leaf Pine presented by Governors James B. Hunt, Jr. and Michael Easley. In 2010, she was awarded the "Unsung Hero Award" by the North Carolina Black Women Empowerment Network. She was also a charter member of the Harriet B. Webster Task Force for Student Success.
Left to cherish her memory are her children: Jonnita Baker Williams (Tyrone), John Haywood Baker, III (Carla) and Ada Hicks Roach; five grandchildren: Tyler, Tynia, John IV, Maya and Isaiah; sister, Elsie H. Potter; brothers, Virgil M. Hicks, Sr., and Maurice A. Hicks (Carolyn); sister-in-law, Delores B. Wilder (Thomas), and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Juanita had two special children, Gerald Baker and Pina Baker-Hunt (Rhodney and Paris) along with a host of others who considered themselves her special children.
Funeral services were held 11:00 a.m., Monday, July 1, 2013, at St. Matthew AME Church, 1629 Bennett Street, Raleigh, NC 27604. Entombment followed at Carolina Biblical Gardens. In lieu of flowers, please make contributions to the John and Juanita Baker Memorial Fund at St. Matthew AME Church.
