Joaquín Piña
Birth: May 25, 1930
Provincia de Barcelona
Cataluna, Spain
Death: Jul. 8, 2013

Roman Catholic Bishop. He was ordained a priest in 1961 and he joined the Society of Jesus (Jesuits). Based in Paraguay, he developed tasks in support of the peasantry and in opposition to the dictatorship of General Alfredo Stroessner, who later expelled him along with other Jesuit priests. Then came to the province of Misiones, Argentina, where he began to give lectures and seminars, and took charge of the parish of Itatí. In 1987, the Vatican established the Bishopric of Puerto Iguazú and appointed him as Bishop of the Diocese. The today Pope Francisco, appointed him as Episcopal Delegate for the Pastoral Aboriginal, until by reason of age, at his 75th birthday, became Emeritus Bishop of Iguazú. He led a civic coalition that managed to avoid a draft indefinite reelection of the governor of the province of Misiones, Carlos Rovira, in 2006, in direct opposition to the government of then President of Argentina Néstor Carlos Kirchner. (bio by: Errete)
