Prussian Army General. He rose from Lieutenant to Lieutenant General in the Prussian Army under King Friedrich Wilhelm III, and instituted many reforms in the Prussian military. He served as the King's Chief of Staff during the Wars against Napoleon Bonaparte, and was mortally wounded at the 1813 Battle of Lützen. The World War I armored cruiser SMS Scharnhorst and the World War II battleship Scharnhorst was named for him.
