U.S. Congressman. In 1933, he was a student in the Citizens Military Training Camps and served as battery officer in Massachusetts National Guard. He graduated from the University of Vermont, in 1938 and he served in the U.S. Army in Europe, during World War II. After the war, he was district manager for the Equitable Life Assurance Society in Boston, Massachusetts and was a member of the faculty of the Boston University Evening College of Commerce, (1948-49). In addition, he was a graduate of the Command and General Staff School and rose to the rank of Colonel in the U.S. Army Reserves. Entering politics, he was a member of the Massachusetts State Senate, (1953-56). In 1959, he was elected as a Republican to the Eighty-sixth Congress and to the next six succeeding Congresses, serving until 1973. Not a candidate for reelection, he became a partner in a general insurance firm in Brockton, Massachusetts and retired in 1984. The Hastings Keith Federal Building, in New Bedford, Massachusetts, is named in his honor.
