James was the son of James Whittingham and Mary Moungie. According to the 1880 census he was a woodcarver. On 30 Jun 1880 he married Mary King and they had four daughters: Mary, Kathryn, Agnes and Eva. He was a woodcarver by trade. James died of typhoid fever and other injuries incurred in the 1890 Louisville Cyclone. He was injured when the Falls City Hall collapsed during the tornado and was confined to his home for the remainder of his life. He was 32.
