Actor. Born in Norwalk, Connecticut he came later to acting, and made his debut in “The Great Gildersleeve” television program at the age of 44. His feature film debut came the following year with an uncredited role in “Mohawk.” A character actor of distinctive appearance, he appeared in almost one hundred roles in the span of a dozen years, many, such as those in “The True Story of Jesse James” (1957), "That Touch of Mink" and “Son of Flubber” (1962), "The Great Race" (1965), and “In the Heat of the Night (1967) were uncredited. He also appeared in numerous television productions, most often westerns, such as “The Real McCoys,” “Wanted: Dead or Alive,” “Maverick,” “The Rifleman,” “Cimarron,” “Have Gun - Will Travel,” “Gunsmoke,” “The Big Valley,” and “Bonanza.” In 1964, he was cast against type in the pilot for a new science fiction series called Star Trek where he played Transporter Chief Pitcairn. When the pilot failed as presented, and the series was reworked, his character was cut. He appeared in a dozen more often uncredited roles over the next three years before his untimely death at the age of 57.
