Former Bishop of the Diocese of Livorno, Monsignor Emilio Guano was renowned Biblical scholar, known for his role as Council Father during the Second Vatican Council.

A native of Genoa, he entered Seminary at the young age of nine and was ordained to the priesthood at 22 years of age on December 23, 1922, at the Basilica of St. John Lateran in Rome, where he was specializing his studies in Sacred Scipture at the Biblical Insitute. An active member within the "Federazione Universitaria Cattolica Italiana" (FUCI), between 1926 and 1955, he lectured theology at the Student House of the Carmelites of Genoa and later Church History, Patristics and Hebrew at the Archdiocesan Seminary of the name city.

Aged 61, he was appointed Bishop of the Diocese of Livorno by Pope John XXIII, receiving his episcopal consecration from Cardinal Giuseppe Siri, assisted by Bishops Pietro Massa PIME., and Pietro Zuccarino.

Guano soon played a leading role in the Second Vatican Council especially in the implementation of the conciliar documents, "Gaudium et Spes" and "Lumen Gentium", giving a significant contribution on the theme of ecumenism, liturgical reform and the role of the laity in the Church, which role led his name to be remembered along those of Fathers Milani, Balducci, Turoldo and Mazzolari, Bishop Pellegrino and Cardinal Lercaro.

Bishop Guano passed way in his native Genoa aged 70, and in accordance with his wishes, was buried at the Cimitero della Misericordia of Livorno, in the section reserved for children, "for we are all children in God's eyes", he had stated in order to explain this particular desire. On the day of his 37th death anniversary, his remains were however removed from the named section in order to render space for new burials. His pastoral ring, found intact during the exhumation, was given to Bishop Alberto Ablondi, a great friend and collaborator of the late Bishop Guano.
