Edythe Alice Yancey Bradley died Monday, July 29, 2013. She was born Oct. 28, 1919. She was almost 94 years old but you would never have known it! Her hair was still mostly brown, her clothing modern and attractive and she remained lively and involved with her family and her Church. She lived in and cared for her own home (and drove her car!) until a few months ago.
She was the sixth of eight children born to Effie Jane Cobbley and James Henry Yancey. She is survived by her brother Harold (Ruth)Yancey and her sister Maxine(Max) Stone and was preceded in death by Gladys (Var) Buchanan, Evelyn Yancey, Zola (Lawrence) Ricks, Lowell (Florence) Yancey, Elaine (Earle) Searle.
She was taught by her mother and excelled at all things domestic…sewing (clothing, curtains, quilts), cooking (orange rolls, lemon meringue pies and daily, delicious, nutritious meals), decorating (painting, thrifty makeovers, clean and inviting home) and nursing (rocking, tending and loving us back to health). From her father she learned to "keep the books" of his construction business and to help with the tithing from the Ward where he was Bishop. Edythe reluctantly noted that as a young girl she brought home several illnesses that spread through her entire family and resulted in a big "Quarantine" sign being placed on their front door by the Health Department.
Edythe met the dashingly handsome Neil Bradley at a roller skating rink in Shelley, Idaho. She waited for him while he served his mission in the Southern States Mission and then they married in the Salt Lake Temple just a few weeks after he returned home. They are the parents of 8 children: Joan (D.J.) Simpson, Patricia (Bruce) Barton, Reed (Julia) Bradley, Mark (Jean) Bradley, Todd (Stacy) Bradley. Three more babies were born who died at birth or shortly thereafter: Kristen, Preston and Thomas.
Neil was 6'2" and Edythe was 5'2" but they were a match made in Heaven. Both hard workers and thrifty to the core, they supported each other through the thick and thin of life….missions for the LDS Church to New Zealand (1956-59) and England (1960-64), the deaths of the babies, numerous moves, houses built or renovated, years of service in the Salt Lake and Bountiful Temples, fun with friends skiing or golfing, and tramping all over the world on Church assignments until Neil's retirement from the LDS Church Real Estate Department. She tenderly cared for him until his death in 1998. At the heart of this loving union was their family who received plenty of love and attention…and the occasional spanking. Edythe's biggest regret was not ever making it back to New Zealand to show Mark where he was born.
Most of all Edythe loved and cared for her family. She has 34 grandchildren and 64 great grandchildren. She knew them all well and loved them. She wrote letters, sent birthday cards and made phone calls to family, many friends (that she loved like family) and neighbors to stay in touch and express her love and concern. That affection was returned to her as she spent her last 4 months at Apple Village Assisted Living in Layton. It was tough for her to slow down and allow everything to be done for her. She didn't have a lazy bone in her body and rarely watched TV so the days became long and passed slowly. Our family would like to express a heartfelt "thank you" to the many friends and members of the Canyon Park Ward in Bountiful where she lived for the past 50 years for your visits, phone calls and cards. You cheered up her last few months and made them bearable! To the staff of Apple Village we thank you for your watchful attention to her. Kim from Caregivers was her wonderful hospice nurse. Our Mom excelled at giving herself away, thus our lives were filled with her. Her life was her testimony! We will miss our Mom and Grandma!
Viewing will be held at Russon Brothers Mortuary, 295 N. Main, Bountiful, on Friday, August 2 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. and Saturday, August 3 at Canyon Park Ward from 9:45 to 10:45 a.m., 1190 East Bountiful Hills Drive, Bountiful. Funeral Services begin at 11 a.m.
