LAURA LOUISE HELMS, July 25, 2013.—Laura Louise Helms, 87, of Atria Assisted Living, Knoxville, passed away peacefully at Fort Sanders Park West Hospital on the morning of July 25, 2013.

The fourth of four daughters, she was born to Frederick Morgan Pile Jr. and Della Ruth Stroup Aug. 3, 1925, at the West Philadelphia Hospital for Women.

She grew up in the Philadelphia suburb of Lansdowne, where she met her husband-to-be, Jacob George helms. They married June 1, 1946, after Jake's return from oversees service in the Air Corps.

When their son, Richard, was five and their daughter, Beth, three, they moved to Pittsburgh, Penn., where they would reside happily for more than 50 years. They moved to Carmel, Ind., in 2002, where her husband and stalwart companion of 57 years passed away a year later.

She moved to Clinton in 2005. Her infectious enthusiasm and fun-loving extroversion won her the friendship of her neighbors in the Willow Run Apartments, where she lived with a fiercely independent spirit until May 2013. She thoroughly enjoyed her time at Atria Assisted Living in Knoxville and will be missed by the many friends she made there.

She is predeceased by: Husband, Jacob Helms; parents, Frederick Jr. and Della Pile; and sisters, Barbara Baxter and Ruth Haviland.

She is survived by: Sister, Elizabeth Orsini of Folcroft, Penn.; son, Richard Helms (Dorothea) of Sunderland, Ontario, Canada; daughter, Beth Wytiaz (Ken) of Clinton; and grandchildren, Michael Helms of Raleigh, N.C., Thomas Wytiaz of Clinton, Gregory Wytiaz of Knoxville, and Mary Sheldon of Markham, Ontario, Canada.

A private family service was held.

In lieu of flowers, donations to a charity of the donor's choice are encouraged.
