After speeding through the timing lights, he (John D. Mathis, Jr.) lost control of his car and careened more than 200 yards into a field. He was thrown from his vehicle. He was rushed to a nearby hospital where he died about forty minutes after his arrival. The drag strip was located on an abandoned U.S. army base and 2,000 spectators witnessed the accident. He lived in Westwood, Alabama.
