Mrs. Ruth Hill Coltrane, age 92, of Emory, VA, joined her heavenly family Tuesday, August 6, 2013. She was born February 12, 1921 to the late Emory Victor Hill and Margaret Gollehon Hill. Ruth was a member of Emory United Methodist Church and active in the United Methodist Women and the Half Century Club. She and her husband, Bill, formerly belonged to Thalia United Methodist Church in Virginia Beach, Virginia. She was predeceased by her husband, William Branson Coltrane, her parents and eight siblings: Tatum, Earl, Howard, Kenneth "Yost", Estes, Emory, Elizabeth "Sis", and Kelly. She is survived by one sister, Margaret Raleigh of Emory, VA, three daughters, Rebecca Coltrane Greening of Lexington, NC, Margaret Ann Hurt (JG) of Danville, VA, and Bettie Coltrane of Charlotte, NC; seven grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; three great-great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
"Mama Ruth" loved her family and would entertain them with funny stories about growing up in such a large family. She enjoyed Emory & Henry football, traveling, working with her houseplants and was a ray of sunshine to all who met her.
A private inurnment service will take place in the Holston Conference Cemetery at Emory. A memorial service will be held at 11 o'clock a.m. Saturday, August 10, at Emory United Methodist Church, located in the Memorial Chapel on the campus of Emory & Henry College with Reverend David Jackson officiating. A luncheon will follow the service. In lieu of flowers memorial gifts are suggested to Hospice of Southwest Virginia, 301 Valley Street, Abingdon, Virginia, 24210, or to Washington County Habitat for Humanity, P.O. Box 203, Abingdon, Virginia, 24212. Friends are welcome to visit with the family after noon on Friday at the residence of her sister, Margaret Raleigh, 30581 Oxford Avenue, Emory, VA.
