Born in Black Flat, Notting Hill, Victoria, on December 8, 1902, Sister Madeleine Lawrence was by the time of her death Australia's oldest Catholic nun, having seen the world change from telegrams to mobile phones, ships to space travel and everything in between. She'd lived through five major wars, 18 US presidents, five British monarchs and all 27 Australian prime ministers.

Joining the Sister of Mercy, she was trained in Goulburn in the early 1920's from the age of 17. Her first of four stints at Jerilderie's St Joseph's School, New South Wales, began in 1923.

She retired in 1978 after a two-year posting at the same school, having also taught at Finley, Goulburn, Gundagai, Crookwell and Galong.

Passing away at the venerable age of 110, Requiem Mass was held at 10.30 am., in St Mary's Catholic Church, Young, on Monday, June 24, 2013, followed by interment at Young Lawn Cemetery.
