Lydia and husband Alven were married by Enoch Burnham, JP. Lydia and Alven lived on the main Northfield Road, about one mile from Williamstown village. They farmed. Alven was an active worker in the Universalist Church; and in the early development of the Social Library in Williamstown; and held important town offices; was an assistant judge in County Court for two terms (an elective county office); and a delegate to the Vermont state Constitutional Convention in 1870.
He was also a staunch Democrat, and like others of his generation, a conservative farmer and in his ideas. He was so conservative that, according to his grandson Rev. Alven Smith, his children "had" to take the other extreme in order to create "balance."
