Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. He was a businessman residing in New York City, New York when the Civil War started. He enlisted in the Union Army on June 4, 1864 at the age of 24, and was commissioned 1st Lieutenant in Company G, 62nd New York Volunteer Infantry on June 30, 1861. Promoted to Captain and commander of Company D on October 1, 1861, he served in that duty for the next year. On November 14, 1862 he was transferred to the 153rd New York Volunteer Infantry, and promoted to Major, Field and Staff. In April 1863 Colonel Duncan McMartin, who had commanded the 153rd New York since its inception, received a medical discharge due to disability, and on April 21, 1863 Major Davis was promoted to Colonel and regimental commander. His unit was sent to Louisiana to serve in the army under Major General Nathaniel Banks, and fought in April 9, 1864 Battle of Pleasant Hill, which was the last battle fought in Louisiana during the failed Red River Campaign. After the conclusion of the campaign the regiment was sent to Virginia, where it served under Major General Philip H. Sheridan in the Shenandoah Valley. Colonel Davis led his men in the Battles of 3rd Winchester and Fisher's Hill, and his brigade (1st Brigade, 1st Division, XIX Corps) in the pivotal October 19, 1864 Battle of Cedar Creek. He was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers on October 19, 1864 for "gallant and meritorious services in the battles of Opequan, Fisher's Hill, and Middletown, Va.", and served in occupation duty until he was honorably mustered out on October 2, 1865. After the war he became a successful New York City real estate agent, and was very involved in the Grand Army of the Republic and other veterans groups. He died in his New York City home on West 12th Street in October 1890.
