OBITUARY-
Clifford "Donald" Severson, age 95, of Austin, died Monday morning, April 28, 2003, at St. Mark's Lutheran Home in Austin.
The life of Don Severson began Jan. 16, 1908, when Don's 10-year-old brother, Arnold, drove a horse-drawn sled to meet a doctor at the corner between Carpenter and Northwood. He took the doctor back to the farm three miles southwest of Carpenter and brought into the world a son to Sam and Sarah (Ellingboe) Severson. Donald Severson grew up to be a basketball player and baseball player at Carpenter School. He continued to play when he was out of school.
Don lived in Illinois where he made sample hardware for salesmen to use as display for cupboards, etc. He moved to northern Minnesota and later moved back to Iowa.
He married Icle F. (Greiner) on March 28, 1942, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa and moved to the home place to farm and sell DeKalb seed corn. In 1953, Don retired from farming, and the family moved to Carpenter where he took the job of teller at Carpenter Bank and later became the manager. Don and Icle moved to Florida in 1960 where he got a job as loan officer at Pratt Whitney Aircraft Corporation. After 24 years, they returned to the Midwest, making their residence in Austin.
Don enjoyed reading, politics and cars.
Survivors include his wife, Icle Severson; a daughter, Kaye (Irving) Nagel of Rose Creek; a son, Bruce (Susan) Severson of Collinsville, Okla.; five grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by three brothers, Arnold, Roy and Lloyd.
