Professional Basketball Player. He was a member of the original Boston Celtics' team and is acknowledged by many as being a pioneering force in the passing aspect of the game. He initially achieved greatness on the hardwood at Thomas Jefferson High School in Brooklyn, when he led his team to the PSAL Crown in 1936. After enrolling at St. John's University, Garfinkel wasted no time making an impact on their program while playing at the point guard position. He was a major contributor to two Red Storms' National Invitation Tournament (NIT) appearances and individually was recipient of the Haggerty Award for the 1940-1941 NCAA season. Following service with the United States Army during World War II, he began playing professionally with the Philadelphia Sphas of the American Basketball League. He moved onto the Rochester Royals of the National Basketball League prior to playing three seasons with the Boston Celtics of the then Basketball Association of America (a precursor of the National Basketball Association). During his years with the Celtics (1946 to 1949), he totaled 476 points in 92 games played. After retiring as a player, he remained in the sport to serve as a referee and coach in addition to teaching. He was inducted into the National Jewish Sports Hall of Fame in 2004 and is a member of the St. John's University Athletic Hall of Fame. (bio by: C.S.)
