Artist's Model. Born Saske van Uylenburgh in Leeuwarden, Friesland, the youngest of nine children of Sjoukje Osinga and Rombertus van Uylenburgh, a town burgomaster. She was orphaned at the age twelve, and she was sent to live in her sister's household. In 1631 she moved to Amsterdam to the household of her cousin, Hendrick van Uylenburgh, an artist and art dealer. It was there she met the promising artist, Rembrandt van Rijn, he painted her portrait for the first time in 1632. The couple was betrothed after she came of age in 1633 and married in June 1634. She posed for her husband for dozens of drawings, etchings, and paintings all with varied depictions and costumes. In 1639 they moved to a house, now the Rembrandt House Museum, in Jodenbreestraat. They had four children, only one of whom, Titus, survived infancy.
