She became a private pilot on 23 Dec 1947 at age 17 which at the time was one year before she could legally drive an automobile. She earned money for her flying lessons by delivering newspapers. She taught her husband, and all her children how to fly. She became airport manager at Whitefield in 1955. She was involved in many daring rescues and received numerous awards and honors. She was a guest on the television program To Tell The Truth.
She crashed and died flying back from Canada in a snow storm.
