His parents were:

John Witt IV
1705 – 1769

Sarah Pearl Ivory
1709 – 1784

He married Olivia Campbell on Feb 13 1787.

As you can see from the names of his children below, this family was one of the several Witt descendant lines that changed their name to DeWitt. It is not clear if Benjamin and Olivia changed their last name or just some of their children. In 1829 several of their sons did so, but Benjamin was deceased at that time. All of his daughters married before 1829 so it is not clear if they changed their last names to DeWitt. [Olivia married again after Benjamin's death and she is listed as Mrs. Olivia Bacon on her gravestone. (See her memorial via the link below.)]

One of Benjamin's brothers was Joseph P Witt. Two of Joseph's male descendants are currently involved with our Y Chromosome DeWitt / Witt DNA Project. One descendant family changed their name to DeWitt while the other retained the Witt surname. The analysis conforms that the families are descendant from a common ancestor.

Benjamin and Olivia had many children:

Stearns Witt DeWitt
1787 – 1848
(See link below.)

Sophia Witt (Earl)
1789 – 1885

Polly Witt (Thompson)

(US Congressman)
