Prussian Lieutenant General. Knight of the order Pour le Merite. He began his career as a cadet in the Saxon Army in Dresden in 1743. Taken prisoner by the Prussians in 1745, he decided to join that service, beginning as an enlisted man in 1746. He rose to officer rank and took part in the Seven Years War. From there he gradually rose through the ranks and became commanding colonel of a infantry regiment in 1778. From there he was named by King Friedrich Wilhelm II to the College of War and was in charge of the care of invalids. In 1793 he was promoted to Major General and in 1798 to Lieutenant General.
