English Aristocracy. Duchess of Clarence. Born the daughter of Lady Anne Beauchamp and Sir Richard Neville, Earl of Warwick, who was known as the Kingmaker. She married Sir George Plantagenet, Duke of Clarence on 11 July 1469 at the Church of Our Lady in Calais during the civil conflict known as the War of the Roses, in which her husband, younger brother of the Yorkist claimant of the throne, had a role. Through her, Clarence would inherit the title, Earl of Warwick, following her father's death, since he had only daughters. The couple's first child, Anne, was born on a ship off Calais on 16 April 1470, and died shortly after birth. Another daughter, Margaret, was born in August 1473. Their eldest son, Edward, who many scholars think may have been mentally slow, was born in February 1474, and her last child, Richard, named for his uncle, the Duke of Gloucester, was born in October 1476. She succumbed to complications from childbirth in December; and her infant survived her only by a few weeks. She was interred in a below ground vault located behind the high altar, near the Beauchamp Chapel at Tewkesbury Abbey after her body lay in state in the choir of the Abbey for 35 days. The vault was made in order to accommodate her tomb. Her husband's remains were also interred there after his execution two years later. A tomb surmounted by effigies of the Duke and Duchess was constructed for the pair, but has long since crumbled. The remains of of the couple are now enclosed in a glass box mounted on the wall of the vault.
