Businessman, philanthropist. President of the Brown and Iliff Land Company, and the Denver and New Orleans Railroad (currently known as Union Pacific); Vice President of the City National Bank of Denver; built the First Denver Flour Mill and the Denver Tramway; cofounder of J.S. Brown and Brother Wholesale Grocery (the largest grocery in Denver at the time); founder of the Colorado Museum of Natural History. He was one of the formost collectors of American landscape paintings, and at the time of his death, his collection was valued at over $100,000. His widow donated this collection to the Denver Art Museum.
