Ketchum graduated in 1926 from Case Western Reserve University. He worked as a journalist and in advertising. Most of his career was spent at the McCann-Erickson agency in NYC. He wrote a travel book "Follow the Sun"(1930) and a historical book titled "Uncle Sam: The Man and the Legend"(1959). His wife was actress and bell collector Robyna Neilson Ketchum.
