Writer. He was born in Jefferson City (Missouri) and died in Moraira (Alacant, Spain). From 1929 to 1936 he was jailed at the Ohio State Penitentiary for a 25 year sentence of armed robbery. In the prison, he began his work as writer. After eight years, he was released from prison and he worked at numerous odd jobs and joined the Works Progress Administration, eventually serving as a writer with the Ohio Writers' Project. In the 1950s, he moved to Paris, where triumphed with his detectives novels, specially with his characters of Coffin Ed and Grave Digger Jones. Himes, who moved to Spain in 1969, died there in 1984. In 1985, "A Case of Rape" was published posthumously. Among his books are "If He Hollers, Let Him Go," "Cast the First Stone," "Lonely Crusade," "Pinktoes," "For Love of Imabelle" and "Cotton Comes to Harlem."
