Sigurd Olaf Thorsen was born on January 7, 1912 at Lervik, Store, Norway, of the parents Haakon O. Thorsen and wife, Valborg. He graduated from the local Common School and later from the Middle School of the City of Bergen. In August 1934, he came to America but returned to Norway in 1937 to complete some studies. After graduating from a Norwegian gymnasium (college), he cam back to America in July 1938, and for the next two years he worked for his brother, Harold Thorsen. In the fall of 1940 he entered St. Olaf College, Northfield, Minnesota, where he graduated in the spring of 1942.

Meanwhile, the country was calling, and he responded by entering military service in October 1942. He trained at Fort Snelling and at Camp Hale. At the latter camp he also served as an instructor in Norse for officers and enlisted men. In September 1943, he went with his unit overseas to Europe where he took part in battles in France, Belgium and Germany. About two weeks after V-E Day he went with his battalion to Norway to help demobilize the Germans. His station was in Oslo. On September 12, 1945, while on official duty, he was killed instantly in an automobile accident. His body was taken to his childhood parish at Lervik, Store, and buried with military honors.

He is survived by a sister, Mrs. Solveig Höyland who lives in Norway, and by four brothers, Rudolph of Norway, Carl of Brooklyn, and Harold and Walter who live on Staten Island. He is also survived by his fiancée Miss Gerd Wilhelmsen of Brooklyn. Blessed be the memory of Sigurd Olaf Thorsen.

TRIBUTE FROM HIS COMMANDING OFFICER

It is with deep regret that I inform you of your brother Sigurd O. Thorsen's death on 12 September 1945 in an automobile accident near Hönefoss, Norway.

Late in the evening of 12 September, Staff Sergeant Thorsen was performing an official trip to an Army installation near Hönefoss, Norway. As the vehicle rounded a blind curve, it met a horse drawn vehicle. The driver attempted to avoid it and in so doing, struck a small culvert and several large rocks causing it to overturn. Your brother was killed instantly.

With proper authority, the body was sent to Lervik, Store, Norway, the home of your sister, for burial. A group of Sigurd's friends accompanied the remains and provided an imposing guard of honor. Appropriate graveside services were performed by a civilian minister and Chaplain Wharton.Norwegian citizen. Lived in Richmond, Virginia. Died in a car accident.
