Elizabeth (Denniston) Clinton was born in 1701 in Scotland or Ireland. She married Charles Clinton about 1721, and their descendants became prominent citizens destined to play a great role in the formation of the emerging United States.
Great unrest amongst the Scotch-Irish Presbyterians in Ireland for religious and financial reasons drove the family to the colonies from Ireland. The leaving of the Presbyterians was organized by Elizabeth's husband Col. Charles Clinton. His diary of the crossing is held in the New York State Library.
The couple emigrated to the American colonies aboard the "George and Ann" May 9th to October 4th 1729 with several of their children. Daughter Catherine Clinton was "sick of the measles" on the journey but lived to marry James McClaughry. Son James Clinton also became "sick of the measles" on the journey and died. Daughter Mary also died aboard the ship. They settled in Ulster County, New York and later in Little Brittain, Orange County, New York.
Other children born to the couple were Dr. Alexander Clinton, General James Clinton who served as Brigadier General and Major General in New York during the Revolutionary War, Dr. Charles Clinton, and George Clinton who later became Vice President under Presidents Thomas Jefferson and Madison.
