Hannah's parents were James Wood and Jessie Barlow. Jessie came over from England in 1890 and boarded in Quebec City with Samuel and Anna Mitchell. She married James Wood in 1892 in Ontario. Her daughter Hannah was born in Quebec City in 1893. James Wood and Jessie went back to England and left their daughter Hannah with Samuel and his second wife, Caroline Pincombe in Quebec City. Caroline Pincombe Mitchell claimed to be Hannah's mother but she was not her biological parent.
