Daughter of Gottlieb Michaelis of Halbersdorf and his wife Elisabeth Ehlert, Caroline and her older sister were raised by their uncle Gottfried Friedrich Michaelis and his wife Louise Brandt. Caroline was born in Halbersdorf, Westpreußen (now Kleczewo, Poland), near Riesenburg, West Prussia (now Prabuty, Poland). She and Hermann Rittmeier married on 18 Oct 1872 in Deutsch-Eylau, West Prussia (now Iława, Poland). Hermann and Caroline had a daughter named Bertha, who was born in 1881 and died on 6 April 1881 - buried in Iława, Poland.
