Hermann was born in Deutsch-Eylau, West Prussia (now Iława, Poland). Hermann's parents were Johann Friedrich Martin Rittmeier and Charlotte Fischer. As a young man, Hermann served in the Prussian military, and earned the Iron Cross during the Franco-Prussian War as a member of the elite sharpshooter corps, Garde-Schützen-Battalion. He was married on 18 Oct 1872 in an Evangelical Lutheran ceremony in Deutsch-Eylau to Caroline Michaelis, with whom he had nine sons (eight survived to adulthood) and two daughters (only one survived to adulthood). He immigrated in 1882, and his family followed the next year, settling in Chicago. The family surname was originally spelled "Rittmeier."
