Roman Catholic Cardinal. A native of Tenjo, Crisanto Luque Sánchez attended the conciliar seminary of Bogotá and was ordained priest in October 1916. Chaplain of the Marley clinic, vicar of the Nuestra Señora de las Nieves parish and pastor of Guachetá, in 1931 Luque Sánchez was appointed auxiliary for the diocese of Tunja receiving his episcopal consecration with the titular see of Croae on May 3 of that year at the primatial cathedral of Bogotá. Named archbishop of the metropolitan see of Bogotá and thus primate of Colombia on July 14, 1950, on that same date, he was also appointed as the first bishop of the Military Ordinariate of Colombia. Pope Pius XII created him cardinal priest with the title of Santi Cosma e Damiano in the consistory of January 12, 1953, becoming thus the first Colombian Cardinal. Passing away due to a pulmonary hemorrhage in Bogotá he and was laid to rest in the primatial cathedral.
