One of the Canadian Fathers of Confederation. MLA for Sherbrooke, Quebec, capitalist who raised support for the Grand Trunk Railway, finance minister in the government of John A. Macdonald in 1858, he formulated the financial terms for the Confederation of 1867 that brought Canada into being.
