Jerome Kinney was born 29 Apr 1835 to James Kinney (born 1800 Hartford, Connecticut) and Clarissa Bennet Balcomb (born 1815 Connecticut). They had moved to St Clair County, Illinois by 1850.

His family was converted to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

He came to Utah in the John Banks Company in 1856.

He married Sophia Dustin 28 Jan 1864 at Bountiful, Davis, Utah. She is the daughter of Seth Dustin and Hannah Loveland.

Jerome married Mary E Squires daughter of Henry Squires, pioneer 1856 in the Edward Martin handcart company. she was born 14 Aug 1848 in England.

Jerome took part in the Echo Canyon trouble, was a missionary to White Mountain and was an early mail carrier.
