The sad intelligence has reached Hinton of the demise of R W Clark, Esq, which occurred at his home near Warford, this county. His death was due to suicide. While his wife was in the garden early Saturday morning, he went to the fence and told her he could no longer stand his bodily afflictions, to take good care of the children, and especially the two younger ones, and hurried as rapidly as possible back into the house and before his wife could intercept him, grabbed a shotgun and blew the top of his head off, dying instantly. For 30 years he had been a great sufferer from inflammatory rheumatism and it is thought that his mind had been at least temporarily affected, else he would not have committed the rash act.
'Squire Clark was about 63 years of age and one of the most highly respected farmer-citizens of Summers county. He was a man of fine native sense and personally a most admirable gentleman. He enjoyed the fullest friendship and esteem of his neighbors and fellow-citizens wherever known and had a wide acquaintanceship. He had long been a member of the Methodist church.
'Squire Clark is survived by his wife and two daughters, viz: Misses Annie and Vinia and five sons - Frank, Ross, Mason Brooks, Herbert and Carl, all of the home place except Frank Clark, who resides here. Deceased is also survived by a number of sisters and was widely and prominently connected throughout the county, his relatives being like his friends - legion.
The remains were laid to rest in the burial ground near his late home Sunday afternoon at 4 o'clock after funeral services conducted at the home by Rev Henry Dillon and Rev Watkins. The last sad rites were very largely attended.
Those from Hinton attending the funeral and burial, were - George Hoover and wife, W P Bowling, wife and daughters, Misses Pearl, Virginia and Mary Kellen, Miss Nora Altare, R S Brown, H H Diefenbach, Joe Fox, Jr, Dr Via and others.
