Margaret was the daughter of Richard Redord, Esq. (1795-1843) and Martha Johnson (1801-1840). She married John, a butcher by trade, in Henrico County on 16 December 1842.

They had at least nine children, born between 1843 and 1859: Martha, Josephine, Isabella, Jane, John T., Sarah, William Joseph, Ella and Alice.
