Musician. Born in Memphis, Tennessee, he was a bass player best known for a member of the Jerry Garcia Band. In 1967, he moved back to the San Francisco Bay Area and began working with rhythm and blues and then rock musicians. He began his collaborations with Jerry Garcia's numerous side projects in May 1970 and became his principle bassist in 1973. He also did occasional work for the Grateful Dead, Paul Butterfield Blues Band and John Lee Hooker.
