Presidential Cabinet Secretary. After graduating from Harvard University in 1941, he served in the U.S. Navy, during World War II and later was a successful bank executive. He began his political career as a House Representative from the 11th District of Indiana, in 1959 and was Assistant Secretary of the Treasury for Congressional Relations during the Kennedy Administration and chairman of the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation in 1963. He was Under Secretary of the Treasury, (1965-68) and was appointed by President Lyndon B. Johnson the 59th Secretary of the Treasury, serving (1968-69). After leaving the Treasury Department, he was president of the American Security and Trust Company, (1972-74). He died of a heart attack at age 78.
