Symmes landed in Miami Township (Hamilton County, Ohio) in 1789 and platted out the town of North Bend, originally comprising 48 lots. One of his daughters, Anna, was married to President William Henry Harrison. Symmes' tombstone reads " Here rest the remains of John Cleves Symmes, who at the foot of these hills, made the first settlement between the Miami Rivers."

Document signed by "Willm. Henry Harrison," August 24, 1805. Letter to the "Cashier of the Bank of the United States," from Indiana Territory Governor Harrison, In full: "On the 30th of December next or as soon after as you may receive my salary for the quarter ending on that day, please to pay to John Cleves Symmes Esq., or his order five hundred dollars & charge the same without further advice." John Cleves Symmes (1742–1814) was a delegate to the Continental Congress from New Jersey, and later a pioneer in the Northwest Territory. He was also the father-in-law of President William Henry Harrison.
