U.S. Senator. Moving to Vermont, with his parents, he studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1796 and commenced to practice law in Bennington, Vermont. He was the Bennington town clerk, (1795-1801), a member of Vermont State House of Representatives, (1789-1802), judge of the Vermont probate court, (1795-98) and chief justice of the Vermont Supreme Court, (1801-07). In 1807, he was elected as a Democratic Republican to the U.S. Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Israel Smith, serving until 1815. Not a candidate for reelection, he was again judge of the probate court and a member of Vermont State House of Representatives, serving in both offices until his death. His brother Moses Robinson served as Vermont Governor and his brother David Robinson was a Major General in the Vermont Militia.
