Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. Volunteering in the newly organized 102nd Illinois Infantry, he was commissioned Lieutenant Colonel, on September 8,1862 and promoted Colonel in command of the Regiment on October 24,1862. He led the 102nd for the entire duration of the Civil War and was wounded at Big Shanty, June 15, 1864, during the Atlanta Campaign. For distinguished service and leadership, he was brevetted Brigadier General of US Volunteers on March 13, 1865. In April 1865, he matched the 102nd into Raleigh, North Carolina where the army remained until the Confederate surrender. On June 6,1865, he and his regiment mustered out of service in Washington D.C.
