Dr. John Lewis Gregg first married my GG grandaunt Martha Frances Daniel. It was generally believed he got the "Gold Fever" and took off for California with his family. This is a misconception. He actually was in the process of relocating to the area that is now Healdsburg, Sonoma, California in 1853.

Cousins Harmon Gregg Heald, Jacob Gregg Heald and their brothers were involved in the gold rush and were unsuccessful in their efforts. They founded the town in 1867 after squatting on the land since 1850. In 1857 Harmon had purchased some of the land he was illegally inhabiting.

Martha was pregnant when they left the Independence, Missouri area on the Santa Fe / Oregon Trails. A baby boy, Charles Sandy Gregg, was born and died in a day or two after arriving in the Nevada Territory. In thirty days they were in Sonoma County, California where Martha Frances died upon their arrival. Their oldest child Luther L. survived the trip. John Lewis returned to Jackson County, MO, remarried, started a new family, moved to Arkansas and then to Arizona. Luther L. remained in Missouri when John and new wife left for Arizona. John had a very successful and prosperous career as a doctor, druggist and rancher.
