Roy Richard Robertson Jr. went to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on October 20, 2013. He was born in Arlington, VA on November 25, 1942. He was preceded in death by his father, Roy Richard Robertson, Sr., a native of Roanoke, VA.
Roy grew up in Prince Georges County, MD, where he graduated from Suitland High School. He went to the School of Banking and Finance at the University of Maryland. After graduation, he served as Budget Officer in the United States Air Force, where he attained the rank of Captain and was stationed in California, England and Vietnam. On November 23, 1968, while in England, Roy met and married Lynda Lera Grier of Birmingham, who was teaching school at Upper Hayford Royal Air Force Base. Thus began more than forty-four wonderful years of marriage.
Roy was stationed at Bien Hoa Air Base during the Vietnam War. After returning from Vietnam, Roy and Lynda moved to Durham, N.C., where he attended Duke University School of Law. In 1972, he clerked with the firm of Balch, Bingham, Hawthorne & Williams in Birmingham. He received his Juris Doctorate in 1973 and began a career in Natural Gas and Energy law, which took him from Birmingham to Hinsdale, IL, Long Beach, IN, and back to Birmingham, where he was a Partner with Balch & Bingham, LLP. Roy ardently represented his clients before the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission in Washington, D.C., earning the respect of practitioners throughout the United States.
Roy served as a Deacon at Briarwood Presbyterian Church, an Elder at Christ Church of Oak Brook, IL, and a Deacon at First Presbyterian Church of Michigan City, IN, where he created the Breakfast Club Ministry for young families and children. Roy found strength in Christian fellowship through Briarwood's Homestead Class, Homestead Supper Club and the Monday Night Shoal Creek Bible Study. Roy and Lynda thank the Supper Club they joined in 1982 for their love and support during the last two challenging years.
An avid student of American history and politics, Roy was active in the Republican Party and let his convictions be known through his words and deeds. He was a member of The Sons of the American Revolution, where he served as state legal counsel, and The Saint Andrews Society. He served on the Board of Directors for LaLumiere School in Rolling Prairie, IN, and was a member of the Birmingham Bar Association, the Alabama State Bar Association, and the American Bar Association.
Roy instilled a love of learning and service in his children and grandchildren, whom he treasured.
A family graveside will be held at Elmwood Cemetery on Thursday, October 24th followed by a memorial service at 11:00 AM in the Briarwood Presbyterian Church sanctuary, with visitation afterwards. In lieu of flowers,
