U.S. Congressman. Ordained as a minister in 1876, he was an active leader of the Baptist Church in Yeager, Kentucky. He was the county tax assessor of Floyd County, (1878-90) and a member of the North Carolina State House of Representatives, (1893-94). On February 18, 1897, he successfully contested as a Republican the election of Joseph M. Kendall to the Fifty-fourth Congress and served until March 3, 1897. An unsuccessful candidate for election, he again was a member of the North Carolina State House of Representatives, (1923-24) and engaged in agricultural pursuits until his death.
