Edwin Upson. son of Asahel and Lydia (Webster) Upson, b. May 24, 1814, m. July 3, 1844, Priscilla Maxwell at Tuscaloosa, Alabama, daughter of Sylvester Maxwell of Charlemont, Mass. She died Nov. 12, 1855, at Charlemont, Mass. He married in May, 1861, at Peru, Ill., Manda Parsons, daughter of Wm. and Amanda Egglestone Parsons of Lockport, N.Y.
Children: Florence M., b. April 29, 1847, m. Jan. 1870, Wm. E. Hooper of Boston; Edwin M., b. June 6 1849; Catherine P., b. Feb. 22, 1851, m. Jan. 1874, E.P. Clark of Springfield, Mass., by second wife, Mary P., b. Oct 9, 1869, m. March 21, 1906, to Oscar C. Avery, Charlemont, Mass.
He went south when a young man and was in business in several towns in Alabama, finally locating in Mobile, and was a member of the firm of Strickland and Co., booksellers and stationers, when in 1856 they were charged with selling anti-slavery books and were driven from the city and their store mobbed. The occasion of the outrage upon them was having in their stock a copy of Fred Douglas' book, "Bondage and Freedom." The whole affair was on of the wretched fruits of slavery. Mr. Upson removed to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, in 1857, where with his partner, William Strickland, they continued their book and stationery business. Mr. Upson was a man of fine character and genial kindly personality, an elder of the Calvary Presbyterian church of Milwaukee, respected and esteemed by all who knew him. He died Nov. 6, 1890, at the home of his son, Edwin M. Upson, at Cummings, North Dakota. He was buried at Milwaukee.
