Staff Sgt. Jens E. Schelbert of New Orleans, Louisiana was born the son of Anna Roeder and Juergen Schelbert. He enlisted in the United States Army as an Armor Crewman on 7 July 1993. After completion of a Korean tour, he returned to Fort Benning and was assigned to Alpha Company, 2-69 Armor as a gunner and tank commander. Jens was a graduate of the Primary Leadership Development Course, the Basic Non-Commissioned Officer Course, and the Personnel Security Detachment Course. SSG Schelbert epitomized the professional soldier and will always be remembered for his willingness to help others as well as his desire to take care of soldiers. He was admired throughout the battalion and greatly impacted many soldiers lives. His awards and decorations include the Bronze Star Medal, the Purple Heart Medal, two Army Commendation Medals for Valor, the Army Achievement Medal (3 OLC), Army Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Korean Defense Service Medal, Overseas Service Ribbon, the Presidential Unit Citation, and the Combat Action Badge. He was a member of Mother Mary Catholic Church in Phenix City. He is survived by his mother, Anna Wallace; daughters, Samtha Ehrenbergand Astrid Schelbert; a sister, Jessica P. Wallace; brothers, Christian Schelbert and Michael J. Wallace; and a special friend of the family, Sgt. Robert Bryant. He was 31.
