Robert Lewis Hamp age 85 of Ionia, passed away October 30, 2013 in Grand Rapids. He was born May 25, 1928 in Lake Odessa the son of Charles and Ila (Shumway) Hamp. Robert was a Korean Conflict War Veteran serving from Oct. 10, 1950 to July 11, 1952. He was a life member of the VFW, Saranac American Legion, Ionia Moose Lodge and Ionia Elk Club #548 where he was a inner guard for many years and their chief cook at the chicken, fish & steak fry dinners. Robert was a race car fan especially sprint cars where he volunteered at Ionia Raceway & Crystal Raceway. Robert married Joyce Scheid on May 9, 1953 at Ionia First Baptist Church and they celebrated 60 years of marriage. He retired from Ionia County Road Commission in 1991 after 38 years and was the 3rd of 4 generations to be employed there. Robert loved to play cards especially Euchre here in Michigan and Florida plus Hand & Foot with his sister in Florida Robert is survived by his wife, Joyce Hamp of Ionia; sons, Mike (Patricia) Hamp of Belding and Scott Hamp of Saranac; grandchildren, Heidi Hamp, Jason (Shannon) Hamp, Amy (Mark) Altman, Jennifer Hamp and Kelli Hamp; great-grandchildren, Keegan & Jakob Hamp and Trenton & Baylee Altman; sisters, Mildred Bopp of Lakeland, FL and Ruth Courtney of Clarksville; sister-in-law, Bernice Hamp of Lake Odessa; and many nieces & nephews, great-nieces & nephews, great-great nieces & Nephews. He was proceeded in death by his parents; in-laws, Bernard & Alga Scheid; brothers, Roger & Donald Hamp; brother-in-law, Gordon Scheid. Funeral services will be Saturday, November 2nd, 11:00 A.M. at Lake Funeral Home in Ionia with Pastor Becky Poor officiating. Visitation on Friday, November 1st, 4-7 P.M. at the funeral home.
