Col. Robert Hayward Twisdale, USMC, was born in Sacketts Harbor, NY in 1921. The 1925 US State Census shows him at age 4 with father: Bernard J. Twisdale (age 28) and mother: Frances Twisdale (age 26), along with his brother Bernard (age 2). His mother's maiden name was Frances P. Fuller.
He enlisted in the military on 6 July 1941.
Twisdale received an appointment to the US Naval Academy as the result of a competitive exam in April of 1939 from the NY Naval Militia, from the A.S., 13th Division.
Because of war conditions, his Class of 1943 was graduated after three years, and he was commissioned as a 2nd Lt., USMC.
The 1940 US Federal Census shows Robert at age 19 as a Midshipman at the US Naval Academy; it also tells us that is father was born in NC and his mother in Louisiana.
