aged 41 yrs the son of George Clark & Catherine Furst Carothers (although Catherine she may have been his stepmother), and was the husband of Catherine Lockwood Carothers.George William "Curly" Carothers was a Civil War veteran. He enlisted in Newville, Cumberland County, August 6, 1862, and mustered into federal service at Harrisburg August 12 as a private with Co. E, 130th Pennsylvania Infantry. Promoted to corporal December 13, 1862, and honorably discharged with his company on May 21, 1863. [George's nickname comes from pension of Zebulon Pike Mull, also of Co. E, 130th Pennsylvania.]
