UPDATE: January 2014

I want to thank my cousins, Michael and Theresa for providing me with information about my Uncle Nel. I am so happy to be in touch with these cousins after all these years.

About my Uncle Nel:

Before joining the navy Lionel worked in construction and would bring gifts to his children when he returned from working out of town. Theresa remembers fondly a stage coach with six white horses and how when he visited her later in life, the first thing on his mind was taking her with him to go buy toys for her children, he was great with children. Uncle Nel was funny and easy to like and people felt comfortable around him.

Lionel always wanted a pet growing up but my Grandmother would never allow him to have one, even when she caught him sneaking a dog into the window then told her it followed him home. After he was married and had children, he bought an encyclopedia about horses and decided he was going to train horses. Nel was able to train a horse to count, rear up, drink from a bottle, answer yes or no and many other tricks. Nel bought a bull calf and decided it would be a good idea to train him to wear a saddle and allow his daughter to ride the bull calf. Theresa says that was her one and only rodeo and that as she was screaming bloody murder, her father was chasing the bull and would later have to answer to her mother for what he had done. Theresa was okay after the ride.

In 1965 Lionel joined the Navy and was almost immediately sent to Viet Nam where he did at least two tours. While in Viet Nam, a flatbed truck he and others were riding on, hit a land mine, luckily, all of the men survived, though Lionel did receive a purple heart for an injury to his knee.

When Nel came home from Viet Nam, he was never the same man he had been before. Nel was unable to remain in one place for any amount of time and the family always seemed to be moving, though they never stayed in the same home, though he was always close by. Eventually, Theresa's parents got a divorce.

My Uncle remarried and I am unable to provide any information about that.

Perhaps my time seemed all to brief,
Don't lengthen it now with undue grief.
Lift up your hearts and share with me,
God wants me now, He's set me free.

The Fallen Limb

A limb has fallen
from the family tree
I keep hearing a voice that says,
"Grieve not for me"
Remember the best times,
the laughter, the song
The good life I lived
while I was strong

Continue my heritage,
I'm counting on you
Keep smiling and surely
the sun will shine through
My mind is at ease,
my soul at rest
Remembering all,
how I truly was blessed

Continue traditions,
no matter how small
Go on with your life,
don't worry about falls
I miss you dearly,
so keep up your chin
Until the days comes
we're together again

God called your name so softly
That only you could hear
And no one heard the footsteps
Of Angels drawing near

The Golden Gates stood open
God saw you needed rest
His garden must be beautiful
He only takes the best

To all who visit my loved ones and leave messages as well as little tokens. I appreciate each and every one of you coming here. I struggle to answer back because I have Rheumatoid Arthritis and it's not always so easy to type. I do visit your pages and when I can, I leave something back. Thank you so much for your kindness!
