Porter and his wife Ruth were married April 14, 1828 at Williamstown, Vermont. Porter bought the farm of his father James, where all his children were born, and where his father died. He sold the farm to his son-in-law, Martin Burnham and finally went to Martinton, Illinois. He was a Republican and both he and his wife were members of the Universalist Church.
