Hugh Macaulay, 97, died June 28, 2013, at the Messenger Care Center in Bainbridge Island, Washington.

Born in Bellingham, Washington, on May 7, 1916, to Murray and Pearl McLeod Macaulay, his family lived in the Deming area. In 1927, Hugh moved with his parents, sister, Jean, and brother, Neil, to the Sappho area near Forks.

He graduated from Washington State University in 1938 with a degree in electrical engineering.

In 1940, he married Joanne Mellis of Zillah, Washington, and remained in the Seattle area until after World War II, when they moved to Port Angeles with sons Doug, Ladd and Bob. He worked for the Clallam County Public Utility District as chief electrical engineer from 1946 to 1955.

While in Port Angeles, Hugh was on the original board of the YMCA when first organized, assistant Scoutmaster for Troop 470, advisory board for the city's DeMolay Chapter, director of the Junior Chamber of Commerce, Jefferson Elementary PTA president, and School District Advisory Board. In 1949, he was named Man of the Year for Port Angeles.

In 1956, they moved to Juneau, Alaska, establishing the family home at Kowee Creek and adding a fourth son, Scott.

He worked as the chief engineer for Alaska Electric Light and Power. He served on the Juneau-Douglas School Board and was a cast member in the original "Hoochinoo and Hotcakes' theater production. He and his family attended the Juneau Methodist Church.

In 1982, Hugh and Joanne moved to Bainbridge Island, where he was a member of the Seabold Methodist Church, the Bainbridge Island Planning Commission and Kiwanis.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother and sister; son, Ladd; grandson, Jerry; and wife, Joanne.

He is survived by his children, Doug, of Eagle River, Alaska, Linda, of Juneau, Alaska, Bob (Kelly), of Sequim, and Scott (Jeanie) of Juneau, Alaska; six grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

His love of hiking and the beauty of the Olympic Mountains was shared with many.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Eagle River Methodist Camp, Hugh Macaulay Memorial Fund, P.O. Box 20272, Juneau, AK 99802.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 2 p.m. July 20, 2013, at Seabold Methodist Church on Bainbridge Island, Washington, with a reception to follow at the church.
